Basescu mid shot STORYLINE: President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that he viewed Romania as a steadfast ally of NATO and a springboard for democratic reform in the Black Sea region. Bush reassured Romanian President Traian Basescu that the United States, through NATO and bilateral relations, was committed to Romania''s security. Sitting in the Oval Office with Basescu, Bush recalled being in Bucharest and seeing a rainbow after a rainstorm as he spoke in a square at the very spot where former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu delivered his final speech. Basescu is on a three-day visit to the United States to discuss political, military and economic relations between the two nations. Basescu also is meeting with Defence Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss terrorism, the situation in Iraq and securing Romania''s borders. Romania, which joined NATO last year, has 700 troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. The United States used a Romanian base on the Black Sea during the war against Iraq when Turkey denied the United States access to bases on its territory.
