Every few years manufacturers release new decoder formats. The old 8-pin plugs were largely replaced by Athearn/Atlas style circuit boards, and more recently the 21-pin format made the hop from Europe to the US. Recently I have been seeing a lot of new UK locos designed for Next18 connector decoders so I figured we'd be seeing them soon in the US as well. Last fall (2020) I contacted SoundTraxx to see when they might be getting on board and sure enough they already had a prototype that they shared with me. Now finally almost 6 months later these new decoders are ready to ship to dealers and by the end of May 2021 we should be able to buy them. So what do they look like, what kinds of features and functions do they offer, how do you install them, and what locos come configured for them?
