The Zwinger is one of the main monuments of the German city of Dresden, it is an architectural complex (palace with gardens) in Baroque style, built between 1709-1710 and 1732-1733 for the will of Augustus II of Poland called the Fort (1670-1733) and designed by the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann (1662-1736) with the collaboration of the sculptor Balthasar Permoser (1651-1732). The term "Zwinger", with which the complex is called, means roughly "inframural fortification" (or "within the city walls") or "concentric castle" and refers to a pre-existing medieval fortress. The complex, almost entirely rebuilt after the destruction caused by the bombings during the Second World War, is considered one of the greatest expressions of German Baroque architecture and until 2009 was part - like the rest of the monuments of Dresden and the Elbe Valley - a UNESCO World Heritage Site (list from which the city was "crossed out" after the construction of a new bridge over the Elbe in that year). Once used for games and court parties, it now houses some important museum collections, among which the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (art gallery) stands out.
