Correcting a Concave Chest in Children

A congenital chest wall malformation is more common than you may think. Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Andre Hebra said that’s when “the ribs and sternum are deformed in, pushing against the heart.” Surgical treatment has evolved greatly in the past 30 years. Dr. Hebra worked with one of the doctors who pioneered the minimally invasive surgery to treat it. “It requires only very small, chest incisions and small cameras, and instruments that allow us to perform the surgery without any big incisions.” The basic principle is placing a bar behind the sternum that then acts like internal braces. “It’s a stainless steel or titanium bar that will lift the sternum, and allow us to reshape the chest and the sternum in a normal configuration without having to break or cutting the bone or any cartilage,” said Dr. Hebra. The bar stays in for 3 years and when they remove it, the anomaly is corrected. Surgeons also use cryoablation to help better control the pain post procedure. “During surgery, we are able to freeze the nerves so that the patient when the recovering from the surgery really doesn’t experience any significant pain,” said Dr. Hebra. Kids can resume normal activities much faster now than they used to in the past. “Typically about a month after surgery they’re completely normal.
