Punjab | Son Of Arrested IAS Officer Dies During Raid | Family Alleges Murder, Police Say Suicide

Kartik Popli, the son of IAS Sanjay Popli died of a gunshot wound on Saturday during an anti-corruption raid at his residence in Chandigarh. Sanjay Popli was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance bureau last week on allegations of corruption. He had been taken for a 4-day police remand. The vigilance team had reached his residence for another enquiry. Police have said that the bureaucrat's son died by suicide, his family, however, is claiming he was murdered. Chandigarh SSP Kuldeep Chahal reportedly said that when the vigilance team arrived at the residence of IAS Sanjay Popli for enquiry, they heard a gunshot. "After verification, the team realised that his son has shot himself with his licensed gun," he said. A relative of Sanjay Popli reportedly claimed that people in the vigilance team murdered his son. "The team asked Sanjay to sign on something otherwise it won't be good for his son. They locked him in room and took son upstairs. After a while we heard sound of gun," she said. Kartik Popli's mother claimed that the team tortured her child and killed him. "Vigilance bureau and DSP are under pressure from CM. This is the way they are killing people," she said. Ajay Kumar, DSP, Punjab Vigilance Bureau termed the allegations "baseless", saying the team didn't even step inside the house of IAS Popli. "We went there to make a recovery of items.
