Experience The Magic Of Vertical Tasting: Merryvale Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Edition

Have you ever done a vertical wine tasting? It's when you taste the same wine from different years, typically from the same producer. That's one of the most fascinating things about wine to us. You can have the exact same vines in the exact same location and the fruit (and hence, the final product) each year will be different. The amount of rainfall, sunshine and other natural conditions can all affect how the grapes will taste. We got a chance to do a vertical tasting at Merryvale Vineyards in St. Helena, CA. We tasted from three magnums of Merryvale's Napa Cabernet Sauvignon: 2014, 2015 and 2016. It was so much fun tasting the differences in each wine. While the 2014 was a medium-bodied wine with notes of coffee and blackberry on the nose, the 2015 had aromas of cherry, blackberry, cedar and florals. The 2016 had notes of plum and cherries and a touch of leather. Fascinating! If you ever get a chance to visit Merryvale Vineyards, we recommend that you do! Merryvale offers a variety of set tastings, in addition to offering wine by the glass or by the bottle when capacity allows. By the way, you can also reserve a tasting in a 2,000-gallon wine barrel!
