Not many mountains are open during this pandemic, so when we found out that Mt. 387 in Puncan, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija has opened its trails to mountaineers, we quickly reserved a campsite. At first we were worried that there would be too many people on the trail, but the sprawling campsite can accommodate more than 50 campers easily. The first day wasn’t so difficult despite the heat. It was just slightly over 3 kilometers in length, which we covered in about 2.5 hours. The campsite was windy and dry. All the difficult challenges, it turned out, were saved for the last day’s descent, which was a straightaway drop to the Aloha Waterfalls. The descent proved to be my undoing, but I was quickly rejuvenated by the waterfalls. But our burdens didn’t stop there. My trek companions decided not to wait for the truck to take us back to the jump-off, so we walked an extra 2.5 kilometers on dry riverbed and provincial roads. Not my favorite thing to do, but it was an overall nice experience. Thanks again to my trek companions for always indulging my eagerness to climb. To the next one!
