RENO ABELLIRA - SURFER, SHAPER, ARTIST

Reno Abellira is a Hawaiian surfing legend, world class shaper as well as a talented artist. I wish I had more images of his unique artwork but there is one piece in here which I photographed back in 2006 when we both lived in Ensenada, Baja California - Mexico. The painting along with others he did at the time he painted with resin pigments. There is pieced together photographs of a MR replica he shaped for my friend Ron Gould who is a surfboard collector and also holds in his possession a Lopez and Rory Russell Light bolt model. I watched, photographed and filmed Reno mark out the dimensions from memory without the use of a template and plow through foam to produce a beautiful board. One thing that Reno told me that I remember to this day "I can tell if a board works by looking at the outline, if the outline looks ugly the board won't work" I hope and pray that Reno is doing well.
