Sunday was the last day of business for Tamsui’s Kekou Fish Ball Soup, one of the must-visits for tourists to the north coast town. The 60-year-old establishment says it’s suspending business because the lease for their factory is expiring and will not be renewed. Despite the rain on Sunday morning, a line of longtime customers had formed in front of the shop. To make sure that everyone could get a final taste of the nostalgic snack, the shop set a limit of five bags of fish balls per customer. Despite the rain, a long line had formed in front of Kekou Fish Ball Soup on the Old Street of Tamsui Sunday morning, as today was the last day of business for this shop that has become one of Tamsui’s attractions. To make sure that everyone could get some, a notice was put up that each customer could only purchase up to five bags of fish balls. Employee Kekou Fish Ball Soup Many things would be sold out by 9:00 or 10:00 o’clock, so that’s why we set a limit of five bags today. I’ve made more than 200 trips transporting the fish balls. The transport is done by this employee on a motor scooter, who brought bucket-full after bucket-full of fish balls over from the factory, and within minutes, they were snatched up. Kekou Fish Ball Soup has been in business for 60 years. Many of its longtime customers grew up eating them. The shop says it’s suspending business because the lease for their factory will not be renewed. Following the news of the shop’s closure, the fish balls were sold out every day before noon. Employee Kekou Fish Ball Soup We increased the supply over the past few days, double the usual amount for holidays. At one time the line reached the rice noodle soup place past the park. Some people said they were in line for two hours. The shop owner says they’re currently looking for a place to set up a new factory, and when one is found, the shop will reopen.
