Filmed on May 9,2022, at Haizhu Square, Guangzhou. A return visit to the same riverside “pocket park.” Last time,I captured the Cantonese opera and fishing. This time, the wave of sound never ceased—from afternoon till late night, different street singers took turns, performing a flowing “open-air golden hits medley.” Cantonese classics dominated, yet each singer’s distinct personality shone through: some utterly immersed, others charmingly unrestrained. While TV music shows need spotlights and swivel chairs,the stage here is the entire city: the Pearl River provides the backdrop, passersby are the impromptu judges, and applause and sing-alongs rise and fall like the tide. It struck me that the source of vitality for those “good voices” screened by cameras might just be this boundless, everyday improvisation. The bustle of the folk always precedes the spotlight of the stage.
