Cross Stitching Skin 2over2 vs. 1over1

This video shows the difference in appearance of cross stitching skin 2over2 and 1over1. This is not a tutorial on how to do it, nor is it to say that one is better than the other. There are a lot of practical reasons why 2over2 is preferable to stitch and it looks equally beautiful. This video is more to help you see how they compare and help you decide how you want to stitch your projects. Below are some tips & tricks I've come across and/or use myself for stitching 1over1. Thanks for watching!! -I like to use a #28 tapestry needle when stitching skin. I don't use any kind of thread conditioner, but that is personal preference. -A magnifier or even just some light magnification reader glasses will be helpful; I usually do not use them (For now I have good eyesight :) ) I do however only stitch skin during daylight when it's easiest to see. -Add any backstitching before or as you are stitching the skin. It can slightly get in the way as you do the skin but it is helpful to have the guideline in place to keep track of where you are in the chart and if you need to add additional stitches to fill in any gaps. -So far, I stitch lips and eyes 1over1 just like the skin. I've heard of others who will stitch lips 2over2 to make them more 'lippy' and pouty. -I prefer not to do the skin all at once. I find that it gets very tedious and my stitches will get sloppy. I prefer to do a few lengths of thread and then move on to other parts of the pattern that are stitched as usual 2over2. -It is very important to mark off your completed stitches as you go! This prevents the headache of having to do extra counting and math to make sure you are stitching everything correctly. It is not easy to frog 1over1 haha. Some will mark off each individual stitch as it is completed, or you can do a row of a color at a time, whatever is easiest for you. -I try to be extra consistent with my tension while stitching 1over1 bc if you pull your needle & thread too hard, the floss can slip under the thread of the fabric. Usually this happens on the bottom leg of the cross, and once crossed with the top leg isn't noticeable. Blended symbols: -A common tip I run across is to stitch the bottom leg of you 'X' with the darker thread and to come back with the lighter color for the top leg of the 'X'; I personally don't notice that there are 2 different colors and it doesn't provide additional shading to my eye. I will stitch these as described in the video, at about the 9:45 mark. (If possible I will try to find a shade that is in-between the colors called for.) There's a certain amount of trial and error, and fudging things to make it work as well. Especially when it comes to blended colors, when there are large chunks it may necessitate adjusting the charting of the colors or choosing some different colors to work for your project. As with anything, practice makes "perfect" :) Don't be in a rush and start with a project that has a small area of skin. This will let you know if/what projects you'd want to do this on again, and if you don't like the process/look, you haven't bitten off more than you can chew. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask! Thanks again for watching and bearing through my stammering and "ums" !!
