Evaporation is an important component of hydrological cycle. It is a major factor which determines the irrigation water requirements of crops. Hence, the observation on evaporation is important for studying crop growth. The chapter gives a description of terms and units associated with evaporation and evapotranspiration. Various instruments and techniques used for measurement of evaporation and evapotranspiration have been discussed. Various empirical methods which estimate evapotranspiration on the basis of meteorological parameters are also included in the chapter. The rate of evaporation is defined as the amount of water evaporated from a unit surface area per unit of time. It can be expressed as the mass or volume of liquid water evaporated per area in unit of time, usually as the equivalent depth of liquid water evaporated per unit of time from the whole area. #like #share #subscribe #civilengineering #VTU #hydrology #GATE #IES #UPSC
