This is our walkthrough of the Becker Village Mall in Roanoke Rapids, NC from October 20, 2020. This is a very dead regional mall about halfway between NYC and Florida. I mention this because that was the selling point for having the mall there in the first place. The mall died very early on, around 2002 or so and has gotten plenty of coverage from bloggers like labelscar and other youtubers. Today only a Merle Norman Cosmetics & Spa and the Roanoke Valley Veteran's Museum are open. They have put up caution tape roping off the Belk court because there is extensive damage to the floor tiles and it is rather unsafe to walk on. They have also put up a rather high barricade blocking off the Kmart court. This mall was toast over a decade ago, and it is a complete shock it still stands today with the doors open. We present this tour completely raw, without musical overdub. The mall had zero activity going on, and instead of a traditional canned music feed, they were playing the local oldies radio station over the PA system, which was old, scratchy and distant, making for a cool ambient effect perfect for a dead mall. Songs used in this video (in order): Steve Gray - Wonder Groove Steve Gray - Reach Out Like I said, this property has received a fair bit of attention over the years so instead of pasting a wall of text here, I'll leave links to a few resources where you can learn further. http://www.labelscar.com/north-caroli... https://sickmalls.wordpress.com/2006/... https://jamieinwanderland.wordpress.c... Check out our good friend Doomie Grunt's video of this mall from 3 1/2 years ago and notice how very little has changed over that time: • A visit to Becker Village Mall ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The current health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the shutdowns and restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall. I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this. There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, Youtube, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush... ---------------------------------- We utilize the value-for-value model here at RRR.
