A Look Back at the Service Dogs of the 1960s – The Lost Type of German Shepherd In this video, I share restored archival footage featuring German Shepherds from the 1960s — dogs once commonly seen in military and police service across Europe. With their straight backs, black-and-tan coats, and focused temperaments, these dogs represented a type that deeply influenced my journey into the world of GSDs. While the footage isn’t strictly from the former DDR, it reflects a time when the working-line German Shepherds had a distinct, utilitarian quality — built for function, not fashion. It’s my personal view that, over time, many military and police units gradually exhausted their original breeding stock. To maintain numbers, they began introducing new bloodlines from civilian breeders. And with that shift, the old working-type dogs — the ones seen in this footage — slowly disappeared. This video is both a tribute and a reflection on that lost lineage.
