Preparing Recycled Pallet Wood for Our New RV Flooring

In today’s video we show you how we transformed trashed pallets into planks we use to create our one-of-a-kind, recycled pallet wood RV flooring. The thing we love the most about this floor is that it’s recycled. We rescued this wood from the trash. We went “pallet hunting” (as we call it) several times to get enough flooring to cover the 92 square feet needed for our motorhome. So, where did we find the pallets and how did we know which ones to use? We found the pallets at small, local businesses. We had the best luck behind thrift stores and lawn + leisure stores by their dumpsters. However, just because they’re near the trash doesn’t mean that store is throwing them away. Make sure to go in and ask if you can take them. Also, be courteous and clean up any nails, staples and leftover wood before you leave. Our rule of thumb is: leave the place in better condition than you found it. As far as which ones to use, we learned that heat-treated pallets are the best option. We didn’t have much of the equipment needed for this job because they are very expensive tools. A special thanks to our friend + former housemate, Heath, for letting us borrow his battery powered tools that came in really handy. Also, none of this could have been possible without the help and generosity of Nate Myer and the Hickman High School shop department. They let us use their woodshop and equipment to prepare and install the pallets. As you’ve seen in this and previous videos, Papa Justus has been an amazing help throughout this entire process. Although our floor was technically free, it was a TON of work and if we had hired someone to do that work for us, it would have been the most expensive flooring option we could’ve bought.
