As Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is released in cinemas, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd and Steve Carell explain how they came up with the idea behind the new film. While you can't blame Ron Burgundy for the pitfalls of 24 hour news, Will Ferrell is happy that his character breaks the rules of journalism in the new Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. "The goal, first and foremost, was to hopefully meet the expectations of it just being a funny and surprising movie. When we decided that the year would be 1980 and realized that's the year where ESPN started, CNN - all this 24-hour programing began that year. "When you make that choice, you kind of have to go there. We started thinking this would be fun that Ron and his team in an effort to make the news exciting literally break all the rules of journalism, and thus create what is somewhat commonplace nowadays," Ferrell said. The film picks up a few years after the first one ended. With the '70s behind him, Burgundy returns to the news desk with co-anchor and wife, Veronica Corningstone. Things quickly sour, and Burgundy finds himself alone and out of the business. Burgundy gets a job offer at New York's first 24-hour news channel. He gets the team back together, including weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), man on the street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner). For Rudd, it was more than the film's historical significance that drew him. "It wasn't that I learned so much. I was more impressed with the work that Adam and Will did when I read the script for the first time and thought it was a clever way to, one, get the gang back together. "I thought it was actually deftly handled and I loved the message and I loved so many things about it," Rudd said. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is in UK cinemas now.
