Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease that affects millions of people in America. Many people with severe reflux also have hiatal hernias. A hiatal hernia is a hole in the diaphragm where the stomach goes into the chest. In patients who either don’t want to take the medications, or still have symptoms on medications, we can offer surgical treatment. This procedure in the past had been done laparoscopically. We now do this robotically. Those medications have other effects. They interact with other medications and there are recent studies that show an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Once patients awake from surgery, they notice that the reflux is completely gone, and over the next few weeks, their diet increases and they can get off the anti-reflux medication completely. After the surgery it requires a one-night stay in the hospital, where all our rooms are private and the nurses are there to make sure patients are comfortable. Usually within two weeks patients are off their medications completely, without any evidence of reflux. After a few weeks of being on a soft diet they go back to their normal diet. The recovery after this minimally invasive surgery takes about three weeks. And at that point, patients can return to work and drive and should not be on any pain medicine.
