Understanding Subchondral Stress & Microfractures in the Knee 🦵 Did you know that stress or microfractures in the subchondral bone (bone underneath the cartilage that acts like the “tread on a tire” cartilage) are a common cause of knee pain, often missed or misdiagnosed? Bone has millions of pressure, sensitive nerve fires, and when these microscopic cracks or micro fractures developed, that is a very painful process, and, is actually responsible for most of the pain in patients who have arthritis. These ‘soft spots’—typically found in areas like the end of the thigh/femur and shin/tibia bones, can silently increase the likelihood of needing a knee replacement by nine times compared to those who don’t develop these “soft spots”. When it experiences small stress/microfractures, this area becomes weakened, leading to chronic pain and joint deterioration.
