Pan of truck driving away STORYLINE A blast in southern Afghanistan killed 40 people and wounded dozens more late on Wednesday, ripping through a wedding party where people had just sat down to eat, officials said. Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said the explosion ripped through the wedding party about 9 p.m. (1630 GMT) in Arghandab district just north of the provincial capital of Kandahar. Bashary said it was a suicide attack. Anxious relatives gathered on Thursday morning by the bedsides of some of the injured, being treated in Kandahar City. Outside the hospital morgue, coffins were spread out on the ground. One eyewitness said he thought as many as 150 to 160 people were at the wedding. The exact details of Wednesday's assault and the motive were not immediately clear, though insurgents often target civilian government officials and police in areas under their control and used violence on civilians to intimidate them. A day earlier, the Taliban hanged a seven-year-old boy in public for alleged spying. Argandab district is on the northern border of Kandahar city - the commercial hub of the south - and provides a major route for insurgents to enter the city.
