Day 111. 36km (78658kms 7yrs) I need a new weather app - YR, which has been very reliable elsewhere consistently fails to predict rain in tunisia. A thunderstorm woke me at 3am but was - fortunately - unaccompanied by wind as I hadn’t properly pegged the tent. It was a short ride into Bizerte where I found a lovely little harbour, busy market and very cute blue and white medina within the old city walls. My search for a camping gas canister was unsuccessful though; it seems the threaded kind is not available in Tunisia so I switched my search to methylated spirits, which I also learned isn’t readily available. So it’s back to burning some sort of white spirit which produces a very dirty flame sadly. In a busy restaurant outside the main mosque I ate a huge plate of a shakshuka type dish of spicy tomatoes with eggs and a choice of hamburger meat or chicken. I can see I’m going to eat very well in tunisia, just not probably in my tent. Inside the medina a tour guide enquired as to my nationality. I replied in the negative to his dozen or so guesses, but when he finally guessed English he refused to believe me. When I - reaching for the French - accidentally relied in Italian that settled it. To him I was absolutely a liar for claiming Englishness 😆 Riding north out of Bizerte I crossed a couple of low ridges on my way to Africa’s most northerly point. It was a lovely spot but with the sun low in the sky I didn’t linger after the requisite photos. There were a few lads about but I thought I’d found a discreet spot to camp in the bushes when I was alarmed to encounter a young man. His demeanour made it absolutely clear I must find somewhere else to camp. And actually I found a much nicer place around to the west. Here there was little rubbish, and nobody about so I found a sandy space amongst the scrub and erased my tyre tracks up from the access track. The sunset was gorgeous but I felt exposed watching it out on the beach so made do with the obstructed view from my campsite.
