During the BAFTA Film Awards, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting on stage when a racial slur was suddenly shouted from the audience. Reports later identified the voice as John Davidson, a Tourette’s syndrome campaigner whose life inspired the film I Swear. Organizers and host Alan Cumming explained that the language was an involuntary verbal tic associated with Tourette’s. The BBC later apologized for not editing the moment out of the broadcast, and Davidson released a public statement , but did not directly apologize to the two actors. In this video, I break down: • What happened at the BAFTAs in detail • The explanation involving Tourette’s syndrome • Alan Cumming’s response during the ceremony • Delroy Lindo’s comments afterward about BAFTA not speaking to them • Why the lack of a direct apology matters • The difference between intent vs. impact • Why Black anger in moments like this is valid • The issue of emotional policing and being told to “calm down” • Whether disability automatically removes the possibility of bias • How accountability and empathy can exist at the same time This is not about attacking someone with a disability. This is about having a serious, nuanced conversation about race, public harm, responsibility, and why Black people are allowed to process racial slurs without being told how to feel. Two things can be true at once ,Tourette’s syndrome is real, and racial harm is real. In this commentary, we unpack the tension between compassion and accountability, and why the cultural instinct to regulate Black emotions is part of the bigger issue. If you care about race in Hollywood, celebrity news breakdowns, media accountability, Black perspectives, and honest social commentary then this conversation is for you.
