A lot of people want to include this scenic train ride in their itinerary because it’s all over social media. And yes, it’s beautiful—but honestly, I don’t think it’s right for most travelers. 📍The Glacier Express is an 8-hour scenic train journey between Zermatt and St. Moritz. It’s great if: ✔️ You’re already visiting both Zermatt & St. Moritz (it’s the only direct route). ✔️ You have limited mobility and want to relax while enjoying the views. ✔️ You want a luxury train experience—it’s the only Swiss train with an Excellence Class option. ❌ But here’s why I wouldn’t do it: 1️⃣ Switzerland has tons of scenic routes, not just the official five panorama trains. The Glacier Express isn’t even in my top 10! No matter where you’re traveling, you can easily fit in a stunning train ride without booking this one. 2️⃣ It sells out fast. Because it only runs a few times a day, you need to book way in advance—which can make it hard to fit into your itinerary. 3️⃣ It’s not a day trip. This train is best used as a transfer day between Zermatt and St. Moritz, meaning you need to plan your entire itinerary around it. If St. Moritz isn’t a priority, there are much easier scenic train options. 4️⃣ It’s a passive activity. You’re sitting for 6–8 hours, just looking out the window. If you love relaxing train rides, great! But for kids or anyone who prefers a more active day, this might feel boring. I’ve even seen people fall asleep or just scroll their phones after a couple of hours! 5️⃣ No flexibility with weather. Since you have to book so far ahead, you might end up on the train on a bad weather day, which means you won’t see much at all. 💡 What to do instead? My top pick is the Luzern–Interlaken Express—a 2-hour scenic ride that’s stunning and easy to fit into most itineraries, since many travelers visit both Lucerne and the Jungfrau Region. 🚄 Need help planning?
