Welcome to perhaps one of the easier ones to tell you about in Erewash. Once again we’re in a mining area. When the pits were here, this part of the village was called Smalley Common. Most of it has been turned into a brand new estate and amalgamated with the neighbouring village, so much so that now Smalley Common as a name doesn’t exist on modern maps. It’s a piece of Erewash history that’s mostly been lost to the sands of time – but there are still some clues around to it’s past Historical records tell us coal extraction in the area is something that wasn’t new in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This part of Derbyshire has had workings since at least 1650. It was recorded that a man named Patrick Richardson took a lease of the coals from Jacinth Sacheverell of Morley. Most early workings were at High Yates Closes - a group of fields to the North The A609 is a major thoroughfare. A linear village primarily now, this has developed a number of facilities along it. There are shops and pubs like the Batemans Arms, which from the outside is a traditional looking pub. The village’s past hasn’t been forgotten totally. The thumbnail for this video came from the side of a coal truck which stands next to the recreation ground The “main” village feels much less like a mining community. There were many pits locally, all of which had closed down by the end of the 1960s, but it also has several farms and a disused quarry. Nowadays it isn’t anything at all to do with mining. This is essentially a commuter village now for Derby and Ilkeston. On the 12th July 1942 a Wellington Bomber crashed close to the village. Arguably Stanley’s largest bit of wartime history, there’s an annual service to commemorate it. Welcome to STANLEY AND STANLEY COMMON. **** My name is Andy.
