A favourite saying when saving seed is "Choose the first seed, choose the last seed and choose the best seed". You choose the first and the last seeds because they ripen evenly and you usually get good seed. You choose the best, well, because it's the best. HOW TO SAVE SEEDS OF: GIANT SUNFLOWER Helianthus annuus cv. When flowers start dying off and drying off, cut off the heads and store them in a dry place to allow the seeds to loosen. Rub the seeds off the sunflower heads and into a paper bag. Label the bag with name and date, then store in a dry place until next planting season! ROCOTO CHILLI Capsicum pubescens Collecting seed from fruiting plants like capsicum or chilli is fairly easy. Pick the fruit when ripe. Store in a warm, dry place until dried out. Crumble the dried fruit or scrape out the seeds; store as before. TOMATOES Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Tomatoes are trickier - the seeds have to actually be allowed to ferment! Allow a tomato to overripen, and then cut up, add to a jar and screw on the lid. Allow to rot for two to three weeks. Sieve the whole thing and wash the flesh from the seeds. Spread the seeds out on a dry surface, allow to dry off completely, then store as before. Watch Gardening Australia on ABC iview: http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/gard...
