Every year I am a little less what I was and a little more what they became. My name is Maeron. I was captured in Beleriand during the First Age and taken to Angband. I spent decades in the pits. I was tortured. Broken. They tried to corrupt me the way they corrupted all Elves into Orcs. And I resisted. I fought. I refused to give in. And when the War of Wrath came and Morgoth fell, I escaped in the chaos. I thought I had won. I thought I had survived with my soul intact. I was wrong. The corruption had already started. And even three thousand years later, even after Morgoth was cast into the Void, the transformation continues. My skin is darkening. My features are twisting. My thoughts are becoming darker. And I know, with absolute certainty, that one day the change will be complete. That I will become the thing I escaped from. This is what it means to escape the pits of Angband. Not freedom. Not victory. Just a slower path to the same destination. I escaped alive. But I am still dying. Still being unmade. Still becoming an Orc. And there is nothing I can do to stop it.
