Villa Kazouli | The SS hell in Kifissia where the movie "Lieutenant Natassa" was filmed We are in 1902, a time when the Greek community in Egypt was flourishing. Several traders build their holiday homes in Greece. Nikolaos Kazoulis, a merchant from Alexandria, chooses an estate of 47,000 m² at the entrance to Kifissia. There he builds the imposing mansion that will go down in history as "Villa Kazouli". Passing through the large iron gate of the mansion, one comes face to face with the sculpted londia, the marble stairs, and the impressive dome that "binds" the entire building in a mixture of neoclassicism and renaissance architecture. In the following years, Kazoulis' son-in-law, the architect Panagiotis Aristofronas, a man of great and versatile education, begins research on the discovery of the Plato Academy, with his summer residence in Kifissia as his base. It is said that immersed in the spaces of his precious library, among rare philosophical works, he carried out all his studies and researches, for a dream that was never to be realized. Those who have watched the iconic 1970 Greek film "Lieutenant Natassa" which is shown every year on October 28, will surely remember the abandoned mansion with the famous lions. The impressive Kazouli villa was the secret headquarters of the resistance fighters in the film starring Aliki Vougiouklakis. The last film of the Vougiouklakis-Papamichael duo and one of the biggest box office successes in Greece, produced by Finos Film with a record 751,117 tickets in Athens alone, a record that was maintained until 1999. During the period of the German occupation, the mansion, after being occupied by the Germans, served as an SS garrison. Legends of ghosts within the mansion seem all the more true upon hearing of the medieval torture of captured resistance fighters. The nightmarish methods of the SS led to the death of 12 Greeks, who were buried in the garden of the mansion. "Villa Kazouli" has hosted prominent personalities, including King George I. After the liberation the mansion is used by ELAS. The first CAT hospital was housed there until 1952. From 1953 to 1955, it housed and treated the earthquake victims of the Ionian Islands. From 1985 to 1987 the villa was the property of IKA, while in 1999 the building housed the National Center for the Environment and Sustainable Development. From June 2014 until today, the services of the Green Fund have been established there. The fact that Villa Kazoulis is built on top of a Turkish cemetery gave rise to the stories of the haunted villa. The underground passages, the endless corridors and the dozens of dark rooms are awe-inspiring and reinforce to the most credulous the various imaginary scenarios. Many believed that the shadows of the dead wander inside the building at night and have never left it. Over time, each in their own way, added a story and reinforced the legend that it is haunted. After the liberation it was occupied by ELAS. From 1949 and for the next three years it was used by the KAT hospital and until 1955 housed earthquake patients. In 1985 - 1987 the villa was the property of IKA. Then the rumor came out that the two lions that were at the entrance of the mansion, to the right and to the left of the central staircase, were stolen. After some years they mysteriously reappeared. The word-of-mouth urban legend became outrageous. In the end, the truth was more prosaic. The then administration of the IKA, made sure that the sculptured lions were removed for maintenance and when it was completed they returned normally to their same position.
