well, i have never seen such an explicitly encouraging reaction to this brand of internalised homophobia in my life. i could cry. this really hit home for me, having spent years with a similar relationship with faith to Gwyn. i never could voice my struggle out loud, because it would make it too real, you know? and i'd probably have done something drastic lol. (don't worry, i'm not at that place anymore.) but man this line really just embodied the whole conflict of sexuality and faith for me: "It's not about the people. It doesn't matter if I'm accepted by others, I will never be accepted by God. My love for Alan goes against who God wants me to be." i don't know if anyone is going to see this but i hope if you do and if you feel anything like how i felt back when i was struggling between two conflicting identities: my faith and sexuality, you remember that it's not a binary choice. this isn't sophie's choice. yes, a gay person can have a relationship with God (or not!) it's entirely up to you because this is YOUR life, big shocker! also, the word homosexual has never once appeared in the bible and anyone who uses the word against you is grossly misinterpreting it. i guess what i'm trying to say, is what ava so profoundly said, "[God] would want you to experience love and to feel acceptance loving whoever it is you choose." those words have been what i've chosen to believe in and are what i take in my faith. so today, i am still a christian, but yes i am also a lesbian, and i'm at peace with these once warring identities.
