"Today is no ordinary day – it’s not a business meeting – it’s a day where every word, every commitment, every dollar has life and death consequences. As we confront the #COVID19 crisis and look to how we can Build Back Better to achieve the Global Goals, GAVI has a crucial role to play" The Global Goals for Sustainable Development outlines the importance of universal health coverage in order to achieve good health and wellbeing for all. A key way to achieve this is through vaccination against fatal and infectious diseases, thereby helping us build a sustainable future with a healthy global population. COVID-19 has illustrated the importance of investment in strong health systems and universal health coverage, and how in a well-connected world, we must leave no one behind. To help achieve this, on Thursday 4 June, the UK Government hosted Gavi’s third donor pledging conference with the aim to raise at least US$ 7.4 billion in order to protect the next generation with vaccines, reduce disease inequality and create a healthier, safer and more prosperous world. At present, 760 million children are protected from fatal infectious diseases, but with xx [insert amount raised] raised at this pledging conference, an additional 1.1 billion children will be vaccinated by end of 2025, thereby helping us get closer to achieving Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing). The UN SDG Advocates have also shown their support for Gavi’s replenishment and its role in helping us tackle COVID-19, Build Back Better and achieve the Global Goals. In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals (officially known as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs). These goals have the power to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change. Guided by the Goals, it is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society and the general public to work together to build a better future for everyone.
