This is a funny little machine. It's a Hohner 261/40 piano accordion, a small basic instrument from 1994 that was exclusively offered as a kit. The bass machine, keyboard, bellows and reedblocks came pre-assembled, but everything else had to be put together by the player. Mine was from eBay - like many of my instruments - and apparently originally came from Marcus Music in Wales, who are still in business making concertinas and cool drums. It had already been put together and finished with a shabby but very suitable dark stain, and being only ~30 years old, it (mostly) hasn't had the chance to go out of tune or leaky or crumbly yet, which is great. The builder wasn't exactly an expert, but it's put together well enough and, after a few hours of tinkering with the damaged bass mechanism, it seems to mostly work alright. I intend to fettle it a bit more and convert the sevenths row to thirdless chords, and after that it should be a pretty decent little folk box. The tune is Mrs. Saggs by Chris Wood. I learned it from Chris Wood and Andy Cutting, on their self-titled 1990 album - it's a beautiful tune, and it suits the single treble voice quite well!
