A major healthcare policy shift has been announced in Turks and Caicos Islands following a sharp rise in national medical costs. During the State of the State address, Premier Charles Washington Misick revealed that overseas medical treatment funded through the national health system will now be restricted to citizens and BOTC holders only. The decision comes after an increase of more than $20 million in healthcare costs to the National Health Insurance Board within the past year. Under the new policy, the Treatment Abroad Programme will no longer cover non-citizens, a move expected to impact more than half of the workforce in the territory. The Premier acknowledged that healthcare capacity inside the country remains limited but said the government is working on solutions to strengthen local medical services. In response to the announcement, the government has scheduled a public town hall meeting for March 10 to address concerns and discuss the changes with residents. The policy marks one of the most significant adjustments to healthcare access in the modern history of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
