Lavrov meets Zarif about JCPOA and Persian Gulf

(2 Sep 2019) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif for talks in Moscow on Monday. Ahead of the meeting, the pair discussed the latest developments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear programme. Zarif said he valued the support given by Russia and China and labelled the nations "partners" in the JCPOA. Zarif's comments come after Iran warned it would further exceed its limit of stockpile of low-enriched uranium if Europe doesn't offer the country new terms on the nuclear deal by a deadline at the end of the week. Speaking about tensions in the Persian Gulf, Zarif said Russia and Iran have a similar approach to security in the area "through cooperation among countries in the region, rather than confrontation between countries in the region, which is the agenda that some others are promoting."
