Three English historical taxes, from 1662 to 1851, saw tax collectors sent out into the country to tax physical items - hearths, windows, and bricks. These were commonly found and widely used items, with strong demand, and Parliament used the items to levy broad taxes. These taxes fit a simpler economy. Unfortunately, the intrusiveness of the taxes caused all three no small amount of unpopularity. The hearth tax was snuffed out by 1689 and the window tax and bricks tax were abandoned in 1850 & 1851. But they provide some insight into how taxes work and how taxes have changed. Note that this video is specifically discussing these taxes in England, for sake of simplicity. All opinions are only the viewpoint of the speaker and this video is not meant to be legal advice or tax advice.
