Summer is on its way and although it’s far from normal times, many of us will be thinking about ways we can get in shape for the holidays we hope are coming! At 56 Dean Street, we have many conversations with gay men about body image and the wide range of perspectives surrounding this. We speak with people with all types of bodies; some who feel confident in the way they look and others who might be struggling with this. One common theme is that many of us feel pressure to conform to a body ideal that we see everywhere (think ripped abs, huge biceps and pecs) which can lead to us comparing our bodies in a less than favourable way to those around us. This does not mean that having a toned, muscular body isn’t a good thing (if this makes you feel good), but we often speak to people who experience stress and anxiety around looking a particular way, which can have a significant impact on our emotional and physical wellbeing. We have put together a series of short videos exploring this topic, and the ways that body image concerns often come up in our work. We are going to be thinking about the impact that this has on the people we see here and sharing some tips on how we might manage anxiety or stress around body image in our everyday lives.
