Belonging/s was a research project that explored the hidden, secret knowledge and ‘know-how’ held in objects, found in our homes. Considered through a choreographic lens we focused specifically on objects (we acquired or inherited) that spoke to our cultural and colonial heritage; embodying critical questions of our attachment to our belonging/s. Here, the term ‘belonging/s’ spoke to our sense of kinship, our familial connections as well as referring to our personal possessions and through them to matriarchal, patriarchal and colonial histories written on our bodies. The research was primarily a collaboration between Amaara Raheem (Black Range) and Preethi Athreya (Chennai), in conversation with dance artist and researcher Paula Kramer (Berlin) and artist and curator Shivanjani Lal (Western Sydney). We also explored chorographic scores devised by Amy Vorris from a project called 'Perch'. Dancer: Preethi Athreya Text and Voice: Amaara Raheem Supported by Critical Path Research Residency 2021
