Back to basics this week with an amble up into the remote fells of the western Lake District to find a large Neolithic cairn of which nothing is really known. On the lower flanks of Stainton Fell, this is nothing like the famous West Kennet Long Barrow. It remains untouched and unexcavated. First thing to do is to find it. This scheduled ancient monument isn't even marked on OS maps. Has it been correctly classified, or is it something else from the Bronze Age instead? The surrounding landscape contains many prehistoric cairn fields, Romano British farmsteads and Medieval settlements. The past laying on the surface. Close to the long cairn is another intriguing feature. Could it be a fallen standing stone? The scenery is magnificent and the weather was great, for once.
