History & Origins Although the original Frankfurt Christmas Market in Germany dates back to 1393, the Birmingham version is a much more recent tradition. Birmingham and Frankfurt became partner (twin) cities in 1966.   The idea to bring a German Christmas market to Birmingham was proposed in the 1990s by Kurt Stroscher from Frankfurt’s festival office.   A small market of about 10 stalls was first held in 1997, which proved so popular that it grew rapidly.   In 2001, the market officially launched with 24 stalls.   Since then, it has expanded massively, attracting millions of visitors each winter.   Cultural & Economic Impact     •    The market is a very visible symbol of the friendship and cultural link between Birmingham and Frankfurt, reflecting their long-standing twinning.       •    It draws millions of visitors annually, significantly boosting the local economy: spending on food, drink, accommodation, and nearby shops is huge.       •    The event features authentic German crafts: wooden toys, glass baubles, star lights, amber jewellery, and delicate ornaments.       •    There is also a live music programme: German musicians and local Brummie performers play regularly on the Victoria Square bandstand.   Why It Matters This market is not just about commerce — it symbolizes reconciliation and cultural exchange. As reported, holding a “German” market in Birmingham would have seemed insensitive in earlier decades, especially given the city’s suffering in WWII (Birmingham was bombed heavily in the war).   But over time, as the cities built a partnership, this Christmas market became a joyous and unifying tradition — a celebration of heritage, friendship, and festive spirit.
