The Kansas Water Institute brings together researchers, educators and communities across Kansas to tackle the state’s most pressing water challenges. As an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional hub, the Institute supports teaching, research and engagement efforts that span the sciences, engineering, humanities and the arts. From sustaining the Ogallala Aquifer, the largest freshwater aquifer in the U.S. to addressing reservoir sedimentation and improving water quality in Kansas’ rivers and streams, the Institute’s work reflects the complexity and interconnectedness of the state’s water systems. Through collaboration, it builds a thriving water research community committed to advancing both knowledge and practical solutions. The Institute’s initiatives link cutting-edge research with hands-on learning and community engagement. Students gain real-world experience testing private wells through the Kansas GeoPath project, while researchers monitor sediment and nutrient levels in local reservoirs and hydrologists work on irrigation innovations to sustain groundwater resources. Other scientists study how Kansans respond to floods and droughts, ensuring solutions reflect local needs. Together, these efforts strengthen workforce development, deepen public understanding and create lasting impacts, proving that when it comes to water in Kansas, every drop of research counts. https://www.ksu.edu/water-institute
