I provide a broad overview of John Mark Comer's message and correct a foundational error that subverts the biblical gospel of Jesus. John Mark Comer's books, especially "Practicing the Way" and "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry", add steps to the gospel in order to access the freedom of the Spirit—the freedom from sin through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. He calls these steps the "practices of Jesus" or the "spiritual disciplines", but in actuality are borrowed from a combination of Catholic monasticism and New Age spirituality. By following the "way" that Comer advocates, one will in actuality be led away from Jesus despite promises to the contrary. Comer repeatedly teaches that a Christian cannot fully obey God until they begin to do the practices, which is supposed to provide access to the Spirit's power. This contradicts scripture, which clearly states that God "has given us everything we need for a godly life."
