Anatomy Students: Students tend to overlook Superficial Peroneal nerve. Superficial peroneal nerve is commonly asked indirectly. So, on the question stem, you might see a question that a patient can dorsiflex the foot but the cutaneous innervation of the lateral compartment of the leg and the dorsum of the foot is lost. The Deep Peroneal nerve is the motor branch involving dorsiflexion, while Superficial peroneal is responsible for the cutaneous innervation of the lateral compartment of the leg as it innervates Peroneus longus and Peroneus brevis. These lateral muscles help in eversion of the foot and helps mildly with plantarflexion and most importantly the cutaneous innervation of the lateral compartment and the dorsum of the foot.
