The amount of protein in your cat with kidney disease diet is very important for their overall health. Chronic kidney disease is the most common disease for most cats. Waste byproducts are normally filtered out of the blood by the cat's kidneys and taken out in the urine, but cats with kidney disease will end up with an accumulation of these waste products in the bloodstream as the filtering process falls apart. Nutritions for your cats play a very important role in managing CKD in cats. It's very important to minimize problems with mineral and fluid balance so your cat can sustain adequate nutrition to slow the progression of CKD. Decreasing the protein in your cat's diet may slow the progression of kidney disease by decreasing the workload on the kidneys to excrete the protein waste products. Less protein also means less need for the removal of the protein itself through the filtration mechanism of the cat's kidney, which helps ease and preserve the cat's kidney function. However, if protein intake is too low, CKD will start to break down some of the muscle mass in your cat. Simultaneously, limiting phosphorus in your cat's diet appears to also help delay the progression of CKD. Since phosphorus is related to protein content, it is basically impossible to get to lower levels of phosphorus content without limiting protein content in their diet. Robert mentions foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce the production of inflammatory compounds that create oxidative stress to the tissue of the cat's kidneys, thus of course contributing to the slower progression of CKD. Robert mentions lowering protein in your cat's diet to make it easier on their kidneys, but not completely remove it because cats are carnivores and need it in their diet. Robert reiterates that egg whites are essentially a great source of protein for cats with kidney disease and that it's low in phosphorus.
