• willie-whistleblower The opening 'Affettuoso' from the Violin Sonata No.4 in D major--fortunately Baroque composers don't seem to have minded "instrumental borrowings" of this kind. In 1704, despite (or because of) being his close friend, Handel narrowly avoided being killed by his friend Johann Mattheson during a sudden spat, when a large button turned aside the point of Mattheson's sword. In 1709 Mattheson married an Englishwoman and he went on to compose much fine music after their encounter. Some would say Handel saw the light by becoming English and Mattheson did likewise by marrying wisely... As Handel first visited England in 1710 and most of his output occurred after his close encounter with death, what a loss it would have been. Mattheson might himself have been put behind bars, and his English connection and future compositions might not have occurred either...
