James Harold Jennings, The Sun, Moon and Stars Artist

Please open the blog below for more information about this vid! Music: Diggin' Up Dirt, (An unfinished ditty by greanteawoman) Copyright 2010 All Rights Reserved James Harold Jennings was an internationally known North Carolina based, self-taught, visionary artist, (sometimes called Outsider Artist), who lived all of his 69 years in the Foothills of North Carolina in the tiny town of Pinnacle - near King and Winston Salem, NC. His art work is prominently featured in museums and collected by 'Raw Vision' type art enthusiasts all over the world. He is also featured in The House of Blues Collections of Southeastern Contemporary Art. YouTuber - immaculatebaking - has a live clip of JHJ being interviewed - please check it out after reading the rest of this blog! Known as 'Harold' or 'Red', to his friends and family, I was told that he was very eccentric and reclusive as a child. Harold was homeschooled by his mother and lived with her in a very nice home until she passed away in 1974. Harold remained eccentric and reclusive until the day he died. Harold told me that his favorite books were the encyclopedia and the unabridged dictionary and he adored the National Geographic magazine. He told me that he never changed his clock when the time changed - always preferring to live on - "Eastern Standard Time, Eastern Standard Time, Eastern Standard Time". When I met Harold in the early 1990's, he was living in a series of abandonded old school buses, with over 25 cats, on an artistic compound of his design, across the road from the home he was raised in as a child. He had no electricity, (preferred it that way!), and rose at dawn and went to sleep when it got dark. He told me that he liked to eat vienna sausage, pork and beans and saltine crackers. Harold was well looked after by his brother and sister-in-law, who lived nearby. As an adult, prior to picking up a paintbrush for artistic purposes, he worked as a projectionist at the local drive in movie theatre and helped on his family's tobacco farm. He would ride his bicycle to and from work. Harold told me that he quit his job at the drive-in because they started showing 'bad movies'. After his mother died his creative impulses were awakened and he began to paint. It was in the unlikely setting of abandoned old school busses, on land without electricity, that he lived and created a fantasmagorical and powerful artistic environment that showcased his prolific talent. His James Harold Jennings - "Art World" - was an explosion of color and reticulated movement that became a pilgrimage destination for art fans far and wide to Harold's chagrin. Although he remained shy and reclusive, he was proud to share his "Amazon Women" paintings (which according to Harold attested to women being superior over men). He painted and fabricated spectacular crowns made of vinyl house siding, and created articulated ferris wheels and whirley gigs that were beyond stunning and beautiful. Harold put a gun to his head and took his own life on his 69th birthday, in 1999 due to a perceived failing of his health and an irrational fear based upon all of the hype surrounding 'the world ending as we know it', due to the coming of Y2k. All of the Y2k crap and hype, IMHO - took one of the most fragile and preciously beautiful human beings we had on this earth. In 1996 Harold completed a large installation of his artwork that was showcased at the Olympic Games, held in Atlanta, Georgia. I am told that his art work still stands today. His work was also exhibited in a prominant gallery in Paris during his lifetime. The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, (SECCA), in Winston-Salem, NC, mounted a huge exhibition of his life and work in 2002 entitled "Health, Happiness, and Metempsychosis." In that exhibit, the largest collection of James Harold Jennings' Crowns ever assembled for exhibition, were presented stunningly hanging, in mid air at different heights, hung from what appeared to be a clear fishing-type wire to suspend the crowns. The reason I chose my song - Diggin' Up Dirt - is because James Harold Jennings could 'dig up' what most people would think of as - trash, scraps or nothing - and make something fantastic out of it ... he was one in a million and I miss him dearly. RIP - JHJ. Google: "James Harold Jennings" to see more of his art and information about his life and works. Photos credits of JHJ are primarily by Michael Smith.
