Fort Benning and the Maneuver Center of Excellence held a “Dawn Service” at the National Infantry Museum, commemorating Australian and New Zealand Army Corps Day. Each year on April 25th, the Fort Benning community gather at the 173rd Airborne Memorial to lay wreaths and honor the ANZAC Soldiers who lost their lives fighting the Ottoman Empire. It is the only memorial in the country that contains the names of ANZAC Soldiers. “It's the day when Australians and New Zealanders come together in thousands of towns, and cities, and memorials across both countries to remember those that fell in war and in peacekeeping operations around the world and as well as in defense of the homeland as well. And it's a time that we take just to be solemn to hold 2 minutes of silence and to remember those that have died so that we can all live the lifestyles we have today.” On April 25th, 1915, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or ANZAC, conducted an amphibious assault at Gallipoli, on the Dardanelles Peninsula, in what is now modern day Turkey. This was the first large scale offensive action by a largely untried and untested ANZAC Corps. Over the following 8 months, 56,000 Allied troops would lose their lives. This included over 11,000 ANZAC soldiers. Today, Australians and New Zealanders use this day to commemorate fallen soldiers throughout their history. This day serves as a reminder to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on April 25th, 1915. And we will remember Them Lest we forget. Payton Fretwell Fort Benning, GA
