The Secret To Catching More California Barred Surfperch

When I lived in Santa Barbara in 2021, in the middle of winter, I decided to stop targeting Halibut, because the water was cold, and the waves were big. So I turned my attention to Surf Perch. I tied on a Carolina rig, a soft perch grub, casted out as far as I possibly could, and slowly dragged that bait on bottom, just like I would for Halibut. After a few sessions of fishing like this, I noticed a negative pattern. I would often get a lot of bites, like over 30, or what seemed like 100 bites, but very few hook sets, and even less landed fish. Perhaps you’re familiar with this experience, and wondering, what to do about it. Well now I know, the slow retrieve was all wrong for Perch Fishing. And I’m gonna show you why a Medium-Fast retrieve is the best way to catch surf perch. Man, the Surfperch have been very difficult to find this season. In the making of this video, I visited a circuit of 3 beaches about 10 times with low-to-no catch. It was eating me up. Finally, I found a school of Perch while fishing with Frank Valasquez-Randise @TheCamoTuxedo. After that, I hit a few more beaches and worked really hard to catch the fish you see in this video. It was some of the most difficult, depressing fishing experiences I’ve ever had, so when I finally smacked a few good ones, it really hit the spot! Seeing this footage made it all worth it.
