We arrived at Lake Atitlan and met a beautiful sight... San Pedro Volcano! 🌋 Of course we had to climb it! We filmed the way up too to show you 'how its done'.... (and not done) 😉 ⬇️Story Below ⬇️ Neither of us had ever seen a volcano before so there was real excitement looming in front of us... On the Volcanic trail – San Pedro! 🌋 Climbing San Pedro Volcano is a BITCH – climb it if you dare …;) If you’re anything like us, when you arrive somewhere new, you’ll see the highest thing in your vicinity and immediately get the urge to climb it. Pedro Volcano looms over lake Atitlan and lets you take in its glory from all angles. I would love to know your opinion on why on earth we think it’s a good idea to put ourselves through hell just to reach the top of a big ‘hill’! We did the classic thing - wake up, no prep and light heartedly decide ‘lets climb that muthaflippin’ hill’. We didn’t even look it up. Just jumped on the boat to San Pedro and started walking. Hopefully you’ll be a touch more prepared after reading this… The walk to the start of the trail is a tough slog in itself. We wade through the San Pedro Sunday market, which floods the tiny main street with cloths, fish, food and an assortment of tat and treasure. It’s a sweet market, full of colour but totally rammo! You follow the road up up up and look for the start of the trail. Now I fully recommend just getting a tuk tuk from either the boat drop off or as you reach the outer town roads (5-10min walk). It is longer than you think and you really don’t want to tire yourself out before even starting. It should cost 20-30Q (£2-3) and is well worth the luxury at the start of this journey. Or should I say relentless struggle… You reach the entrance, sign your papers, pay your 100Q and a follow your guide for the first 30 min (just to show you the way). Our guide put us to shame straight off the bat as he bound ahead of us and I’m already getting a little worried… THIS IS HARD. I won’t go into too much detail, but the hike is pretty solid. It’s direct, steep and relentless! It goes UP! Not around and about - just up. There’s are amazing moments along the way which hopefully makes it all worth it. To begin, a view point toward the start of the hike, take your time and look out, but don’t be fooled – you are not near the top. We came across other walkers who were on their decent – “How long to the top?”, ‘’Arh, probably 45 min or so…’’. DO NOT BELIVE THEM! Everyone says this amount of time on reflex and every 45 min we would hear the same thing. The second feature you’ll come across, half way up, is a big swing that launches out over a heavily slopping field of corn. This is a great treat, a beautiful view and for many people I would say ‘’You’ve come this far, achieved a lot already and its ok to turn back’’. For the solid troopers out there, keep going. Only another 45 min to go…………. 😉 The hike took us 5 hours up. Maybe a little longer than the fittest hiker but hey – I’m a tall girl with a big bum and it’s a lot to carry. Dan faired easier than me but you could see it in his face - it took a toll on him too. The view at the top is stunning – go see for yourself! Keep your eyes out for the mountain dog and give him a treat, he climbed all that way too We crack a warm beer and give ourselves a pat on the back. Down is easier but no walk in the park. It took about 2 hours and offers no mercy to the knees. If you can find a stick – take it. It’ll be your best friend by the time you reach the bottom! TIPS! This is a volcano – not a hill. Prepare yourself Take a LOT of water – 2 litres (at least) per person (Dan) Don’t set off at 4pm thinking you’ll catch the sunset (like we saw a young group do on our way down) – You won’t. Take high energy snacks and lunch (which we didn’t do) Don’t take valuables - no need. Keep up the good spirit If a 60 year old couple can do it – So can you 😉 ( we’re not 60, but we did meet a couple that were on their way down – HARDCORE. Enjoy! X
