TAMPA, Fla. -- From silent comedies to psychological thrillers, University of South Florida students make an impact each year in the film industry. "USF doesn't have a film program but students from USF have been making really great films in Campus MovieFest," said Marcelo Martindale. Martindale is the filmmaker behind this year's USF Campus Best Picture, "The Other Place," and is representing the University of South Florida in Los Angeles for CMF Hollywood. According to campusmoviefest.com, over one thousand student films clocking in at five minutes or less were entered in this year's competition. Only two hundred will be featured as part of CMF Hollywood. This isn't just a movie screening, explained Martindale, but a convention. CMF Hollywood boasts workshops, networking opportunities, exclusive tours and celebrity guests. Attendees from last year's CMF International Grand Finale included Jeff Goldblum ("Jurassic Park,") Elizabeth Banks ("The Hunger Games,") John Cho ("Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle") and more. These guests not only present awards for the winning films, but also offer practical and relevant advice to the young filmmakers in attendance. Four films from USF are competing this year: "The Other Place" by Brown Bear Productions, "The Londoners'" by Ryan Gillarde's Crew, "Bad Beat" by The Kings Gambit, and "Dawn" by Llama Party. "Dawn" is also being recognized as a Golden Tripod Award Finalist in the Best Soundtrack category. CMF Hollywood events start Thursday and end with a red carpet ceremony Saturday night. Martindale looks forward to the viewing of his film and hopes to at least make the top 16. "This is my last year in college. I really want to win this thing."
