What happens if we can't lower the wheels normally. The landing gear on the Boeing 737 is normally controlled by the gear lever on the forward instrument panel. The landing gear is raised and lowered using hydraulic pressure from the aircraft's system. However, in the very unlikely event that the normal system fails, we have a backup system that we can use to lower the undercarriage mechanically. To use the backup system, we access three handles behind a closed panel on the floor of the cockpit. Once we open the panel, a micro switch will automatically depressurise the landing gear's hydraulic system. This prevents any residual or erroneous hydraulic pressure from preventing the gear from being extended. Each red handle is directly connected to the mechanical up lock of that set of wheels. When we pull the handle, the cable routes down to the wheels and directly pulls the uplock pin out of the locked position. This releases the wheels and allows them to free fall down under their own weight. Once all wheels are indicating down and locked (3 green lights) we can close the door and complete a normal landing.
