Nieuwegein is amunicipalityand town in the Dutch province ofUtrecht, south of the city of Utrecht. The municipality is a formergrowth center, located on the riverLek, near the neighboring municipalitiesof IJsselsteinto the west,Vijfheerenlandento the south (across the Lek) andHoutento the east. Nieuwegein has 65,974 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2024 ) and was created on July 1, 1971 after the merger of the former municipalitiesof JutphaasandVreeswijk. The largest part of the City Centre consists of the largely covered shopping centre Cityplaza . This shopping centre has a local and regional function. The architect of Cityplaza is Jan Hoogstad . It was built in the eighties. In addition to many shops, there is also Theater de Kom and the central office of the Nieuwegein Library . Many residents of Nieuwegein considered the heart to be cold and uninviting. That is why the entire heart was rebuilt. Construction was completed in 2015.
