(24 Sep 2013) King Juan Carlos of Spain was vundergoing surgery on his hip in a Madrid hospital on Tuesday evening. Queen Sofia, followed by their daughter Princess Elena and the Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, arrived at the private Quiron hospital as the operation was beginning. The Queen's visit was interrupted by a streaker, who ran towards her shouting "no the secret crimes of the CIA" but was detained by police. The king was working right up to several hours before entering the hospital, meeting with 16 new ambassadors to Spain. He is to be operated on by Miguel Cabanela, a specialist surgeon who flew in from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It will be the king's third hip operation in less than two years. The monarch's once unquestioned popularity has dipped in recent years following scandals that have tarnished the royal family's image.
