One of the greatest additions to Otto Lightner’s “collection of collections” is the building housing the museum he founded. In 1947, Lightner acquired the former Alcazar Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida. Closed since 1931, the building had fallen far from its heyday as a luxury Gilded Age resort hotel. Completed in 1888, the Alcazar was the second grand hotel in St. Augustine built by railroad magnate Henry Flagler. Three years earlier, Flagler had purchased his first parcel of land for development, setting in motion a plan to remake the Ancient City as a luxury winter resort for wealthy East Coast tourists. It had the largest indoor pool of its time. The museum was filled with many historic artifacts. The first floor was the grand lobby of the old hotel. It’s mosaic tile floors were gorgeous! The lobby had several historic pieces for viewing. The rest of the first floor was a historic music collection, the Otto Lightner Gallery, and the museum store. We saw a real mummy, a real petrified dinosaur egg, and a real lion among other interesting things. The second floor was a stained glass gallery, Faces of Alcazar which consisted of pictures of real people who worked in the Alcazar Hotel made by putting together pieces of pictures from motion picture magazines. These apparently were posted on the walls of the hotel at one time. The second floor also had the Russian Bath and the Turkish Bath, and a glass gallery. The third floor was the old ballroom of the hotel. It was filled with antique pieces that mostly dated back to the 1800s. The view of the old pool area from the third floor was amazing! We highly recommend this museum for anyone who loves history and seeing historic artifacts and historic sites.
